Philip Thomas – Locating the Performer
In works of the classic American experimental movement, the experiment is most usually located at the point of composition and notation. Methods such as chance, graphic and indeterminate notations place the focus upon the unknown at the point of composition and the possibility of there being as many possible outcomes as there are performances. But for the performer – and in particular, the solo performer – where is the experiment? This talk draws upon Philip’s experiences performing music by Cage, Feldman and Wolff to explore the degree to which performance is an experimental act in this repertoire.
