We’re very pleased to announce that Tess Denman-Cleaver will be working with saru as artist-in-residence for the next year.

Tess’ background in theatre informs her performance practice, which spans performance writing, installation, live event and public workshops. Her current work is anchored in performative re-readings of modernist literature, including texts by Gertrude Stein and Virginia Woolf, which provide her process with philosophies of landscape expressed in poetic and fiction writing. As artist-in-residence, Tess will be developing work that considers how particular modernist writers use sound to write landscapes. She will also be looking at the relationship modernist writers had with radio to further develop new performance work she is making with Middlesbrough Town Hall and Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2018 around early forms of participatory radio.

Tess completed a PhD on Landscape Performance and Performance Philosophy in 2017 at Newcastle University. Between 2010-2018 Tess was Artistic Director of Tender Buttons performance company, and is currently a Programmer at artist-run project space and studios The Northern Charter.
